The Little English Theatre (ANGIELSKI TEATRZYK) is a theatre in English for children aged from 3 to 9 years.
The performances are presented in kindergartens and schools in Warsaw and in the surrounding area.
One performance lasts 40-50 minutes depending on the interaction with the audience.
A one-time programme includes short simple stories interwoven with songs.
The main goals of the theatre are, on the one hand, to familiarize the children with the English language in the form of an unconventional lesson and, on the other, to play in the world of imagination.
The performances are created for maximum 50 spectators because direct contact with children and the participation of the viewers in the performance are a very important element of the theatre. During the performance children: - perform various gestures and actions imitating the actors, - join in with songs (mainly traditional and widely known, often based on repetition of elements), - answer simple questions, - co-create some stories, e.g. by repeating some phrases or improvising, - greet the puppet rabbit, cat, mouse or lion, depending on the story, - receive props for some stories or songs (e.g. bells, fabric flames, paddles, bears on sticks or pieces of fabric that, thanks to imagination, turn into various objects), - help introduce stories with a joint “story time” and songs with a joint “song time”, - help themselves to biscuits (London Stories) or gingerbread biscuits, “baked” during the performance (Winter Stories).
The theatre is conducted entirely in English.
If necessary, the performance is preceded by an introduction in Polish. In the introduction children learn what the stories are going to be about and what their participation is going to involve.
The stories are presented in various ways: - in the form of traditional theatre, - using props, e.g. puppets on sticks, finger puppets or masks, - in the form of shadow theatre, - based on repetition or clapping, - using improvisation.
Many props are handmade, e.g. dolls on sticks, puppets, a castle embroidered with decorative tape, an Indian teepee, colourful birds put on fingers or an English bus glued with pieces of fabric. The Little English Theatre is full of unusual ideas, e.g. a yellow beret thrown into the air imitating the sun, instead of the English queen's costume a dress glued to cardboard and a hole for the head or woolen snowballs that children throw in the Winter Stories.
The theatre consists of two people: Anna Witkowska - English teacher, creator of educational aids, initiator of ANGIELSKI TEATRZYK (The Little English Theatre). Wioletta Kiełbicka - French teacher, pedagogue and theatre enthusiast as well as a lover of foreign languages.
The theatre has existed since 2008. During this time, over 400 performances took place in over 100 kindergartens and schools.
